Use Nutrition Cognition with Claude or ChatGPT
Connect Claude or ChatGPT to your Nutrition Cognition account, then talk to your food log. Tell it what you ate and it logs it. Ask how your week went and it reads your log, goals and weight to answer. What it saves shows up in the Nutrition Cognition apps straight away.
What it can do
It can read
- Your food log for any day: each meal, with calories, protein, carbs, fat, fibre and other nutrients, against your goals
- Calories burned that day, when Apple Health sends them to Nutrition Cognition
- What you've logged recently
- Your foods, recipes, saved meals and lists, the curated foods everyone has, and items friends have shared with you
- Your weight and calorie history
- Your goals
It can change
- Log food, for one day or several
- Edit or delete what's logged
- Add, change and delete foods, recipes, saved meals and lists
- Record or correct a weight
- Set your goals, or follow an official guideline
It doesn't see your email address, your password, your friends list or your feed. Claude and ChatGPT can ask you before each change: you choose when in their settings.
We keep a record of each request it makes (which tool, when, and whether it worked) for 90 days, and a record of each change it makes for as long as you have your account. The privacy policy has the details.
Connect Claude
You need a Nutrition Cognition account (sign up in the iPhone app or on the web) and a Claude account. Any Claude plan can add it: on the Free plan it's your one custom connector, and on a Team or Enterprise plan an Owner adds it for the organization first.
From Claude's directory
Nutrition Cognition isn't in Claude's directory yet. Until it is, add it by its address, below.
Once it's listed: go to Settings → Connectors, select Discover, search for Nutrition Cognition, and select Connect to Claude. Then sign in and choose Allow.
By its address
Nutrition Cognition's address for Claude and ChatGPT:
https://api.nutritioncognition.app/mcp
- In Claude, on the web, the desktop app or your phone, go to Settings → Connectors.
- Select +, then Add custom connector.
- Enter a name, such as Nutrition Cognition, and the address above.
- Leave the other settings as they are: there's no client ID or secret to enter. Select Connect.
- Claude opens Nutrition Cognition's sign-in page, on api.nutritioncognition.app. Sign in with your Nutrition Cognition account and choose Allow. If the page doesn't open, select Nutrition Cognition under Your connectors and choose Connect.
Nutrition Cognition is now under Your connectors as Connected. In a chat, select +, then Connectors, and check that Nutrition Cognition is on. It works in Claude's phone apps too, and in Claude Code when you sign in with your Claude account.
Connect ChatGPT
You need a Nutrition Cognition account and a ChatGPT account.
From ChatGPT's directory
Nutrition Cognition isn't in ChatGPT's directory yet. Until it is, add it by its address, below.
Once it's listed: open Plugins in ChatGPT's sidebar, find Nutrition Cognition, and select Install plugin. When ChatGPT asks, select Connect, sign in and choose Allow.
By its address
ChatGPT adds an app by its address only on the web, at chatgpt.com, and only on some plans and workspaces; OpenAI's help article Connecting custom MCP servers in ChatGPT says which. ChatGPT's phone app can't add one, but once it's added on the web it works there too.
https://api.nutritioncognition.app/mcp
- On chatgpt.com, go to Settings → Plugins and select Browse directory.
- Select Add, then Add custom MCP server.
- Enter a name, such as Nutrition Cognition, and under Connection, Server URL, the address above.
- Leave authentication as OAuth, and the advanced OAuth settings as they are: there's no client ID or secret to enter.
- Read the warning, tick I understand and want to continue, and select Create as a plugin.
- Install the plugin if ChatGPT asks, then connect: sign in with your Nutrition Cognition account and choose Allow.
In a chat, type @ and choose Nutrition Cognition, or select + and choose it there.
If you don't see Add custom MCP server, your plan or workspace doesn't allow it. Use Nutrition Cognition's listing once it's published.
Questions to try
- What have I eaten today, and how much of my calorie goal is left?
- Log porridge with a banana for breakfast.
- Log the same lunch as yesterday.
- How much protein did I have yesterday, compared with my goal?
- How has my weight changed over the last three months?
- I weighed 72.4 kg this morning.
- Save my overnight oats as a recipe: 50 g oats, 150 ml milk and 80 g blueberries.
- Here's a photo of the label. Add this food to my foods.
- Set my calorie goal to 2,000 a day.
Disconnect
You can disconnect from either side.
- In Nutrition Cognition (iPhone or web): open Settings → Claude and ChatGPT and choose Revoke next to the app. In older versions of the app it's under Settings → Privacy → Connected Apps. The AI app loses access shortly after, and can't get it back unless you connect it again.
- In Claude: go to Settings → Connectors, select Nutrition Cognition, then Disconnect. To take it off your list too, open its ••• menu and choose Remove.
- In ChatGPT: open Settings → Plugins, select Nutrition Cognition, open its ••• menu and choose Disconnect. Uninstalling the plugin disconnects it too.
Disconnecting doesn't delete what the AI app logged or saved: it's part of your log, and you can change it in Nutrition Cognition. If you disconnect in Claude or ChatGPT, Nutrition Cognition may still list the connection; revoke it there to remove it.
If something goes wrong
- Claude asks for a client ID. Leave it empty and choose Use Claude's published identity.
- Sign-in doesn't finish, or the connector shows an error. In Claude, choose Reconnect if it's offered. Otherwise remove the connector and add it again.
- It logged the wrong food or amount. Ask it to fix or delete the entry, or change it in Nutrition Cognition.
- It says calories burned aren't available. They come from Apple Health, through Nutrition Cognition's iPhone app. Without Health data for that day there's nothing to show.
